Roommates bought second-hand couch, found thousands of dollars inside it

These lucky roommates found something inside their couch and it was shocking! Roommates Reese Werkhoven, Cally Guasti and Lara Russo at New Paltz in New York City, bought a couch at Salvation Army for $20 only.

While these three students were watching a movie and sitting in their couch, they felt something weird with it. It feels very lumpy and uncomfortable.

These three roommates bought a couch for $20 only at a thrift shop in New York City, but to their surprise they found a $40,000 amount of money inside of it!

They decided to open the zippers and cut some of the couch to check what's inside of it.

We just pulled out envelopes and envelopes,
said Cally, a social worker with Family of Woodstock.

My mouth was literally hanging open - everybody's was - it was an unfathomable amount.

After they saw a name on a deposit slip, they returned the money to the 91-year-old woman.

Reese stuck his hand under the sofa's arm and pulled an envelope. When they opened the envelopes, they found almost $40,000 in cash!

We put it all on a bed,
Cally said.

We laid it all out and started counting. And we were screaming. In the morning, our neighbors were like, 'We thought you won the lottery'.

I almost peed,
said Reese.

The most money I'd ever found in a couch was like 50 cents. Honestly, I’d be ecstatic to find just $5 in a couch.

After these roommates found the money, they began to talk about what they will do with the money.

They planned to pay off students loans, take a trip and Reese wanted to buy his mom a new car.

While they are making plans, Lara found a deposit slip with a woman's name on it, and so they stopped making plans.

We had a lot of moral discussions about the money,
Lara said.

We all agreed that we had to bring the money back to whomever it belonged to, it's their money—we didn't earn it. However, there were a lot of gray areas we had to consider.

With the help of their parents they search for the woman. And yes, they found her!

They took the money over the 91-year-old woman's house. The woman was shocked.

Oh! I left a lot of money on that couch
she said.

She told them that she started to keep her savings and her husband's savings in the couch for more than 30 years ago.

When the woman had to undergo a back surgery, her daughter thought of selling the couch on a thrift shop for some money to help her mother.

The old woman gave them $1,000 as a reward.

If you're in their shoes and found a large amount of money like that, what would you do?
