Po River with a length of more than 400 miles is the longest river in Italy. This river is known among the fishermen for its big Wels catfish, but not one with a length of 8.8 feet. Even Ferrari was astonished who was an expert fisherman.

They said that it’s the biggest catfish that was ever caught using a rod and reel.

The eight foot-long creature, a Wels catfish, has been dubbed "the monster of the Po" by the Italian media.

"It's a silurus glanis [the Latin name for the species]," Dino Ferrari said. "The American catfish doesn't grow to such large dimensions – at most it can weigh 50kg." He estimated the fish to be about 30 years old, based on its size, adding that the species can live for up to 50 years.

To catch them you need a lot of patience but also physical strength. We fought for 40 minutes to reel it in. We tried it out and then lifted it out of the water.

Wels catfish can grow as long as 4m and weigh up to 390kg. It is a fresh and salt water fish native to central, southern, and Eastern Europe.

The Wels catfish is scaleless with a broad, flat head and wide mouth. It is the second-largest freshwater fish found in the Po region. The largest fish is the beluga sturgeon which can reportedly weigh more than 3,000 pounds. They are known to even eat pigeons that have strayed too close, and can live up to 80 years old.

It is certainly the largest wels catfish caught in the Po region with just a reel, a rod, and simple bait.

According to Ferrari, he only used a reel and a Torpedo spinning rod made by an Italian manufacturer, and the fight with the enormous fish from his boat took about 40 minutes. After Ferrari and his brother Dario weighed the monstrous creature, they released it back into the Po Delta.

Another fishermen said
"any one of us, of course, hopes that these catches do not remain isolated but that these dinosaurs of the river can go back to swim many more days in our waterways."
