Around 1 Million Black Nazarene Devotees flock on Quirino Grandstand

As of 9 a.m., Manila Police District information chief Marissa Bruno said that an estimated one million people have gathered in the grandstand where the ebony-hued statue started its slow journey to Quiapo Church. The crowd is expected to swell to 5 million by noon as it makes its way to the church.

Officials estimate the image will reach Quiapo Church in 12 to 15 hours. In 2012, the image took 22 hours to reach the church.

At least 3,500 police are deployed to secure the Black Nazarene feast.

The Black Nazarene procession, also known as the “traslacion,” is an annual religious activity in the predominantly Catholic country.

Barefooted devotees, wearing maroon and yellow shirts, waved their handkerchiefs bearing the Nazarene’s face as they attempt to go near the statue and wipe the dark statue with their towels.

A man suffered a fatal heart attack while joining the procession of the Black Nazarene, a Manila official said on Friday, January 9.

The devotee was brought to the Manila Doctors Hospital along UN Avenue and was declared dead on arrival.

According to Johnny Yu, the Officer in Charge of the Manila Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (MDRRMO), told that a member of the Hijos de Nazareno died of a heart attack just as the ‘andas’ of the Black Nazarene was leaving the Quirino Grandstand.

The National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC) said that as of 6a.m., the Tala Medical Team based at the Quirino Grandstand provided medical assistance to 84 individuals, most of whom complained of hypertension.
